Description:
Undoubtedly one of the most significant Danish musicians of all
time, the illustrious and unparalleled career of the great Alex
Riel began right here at Jazzhus Montmartre in the 1960s when he
was the club's house drummer alongside pianist Kenny Drew and
bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, the rhythm section that
accompanied all of the visiting guest stars, such as Dexter Gordon,
Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Stuff
Smith, to name but a few. On September 13th, 2010 it was exactly 70
years ago that one of the most respected and beloved drummers in
jazz came into this word. We we deeply honored and extremely proud
to be able to open the doors of the Montmartre to welcome back Alex
Riel for an 10 day celebration of his life and career. Leading up
to his 70th birthday a stellar cast of his past and present key
associates joined him on stage in various settings. This project
was called "Drum Days".
For this drum extravaganza, Alex Riel was joined by not less
than three very prolific drummers/percussionists from various
backgrounds. First and foremost his longtime associate, the great
Marilyn Mazur, who guested the new reopened Montmartre for the
first time. She has had one of the most amazing careers ever for
any Danish jazz artist, playing in the bands of major icons such as
Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Jan Garbarek.
Drummers/percussionists Stefan Pasborg and Birgit Løkke Larsen
completed the rhythm section and the line-up was augmented by some
extremely exciting guest stars on other instruments: One of
Denmark's greatest musicians and cultural icons, trumpeter Palle
Mikkelborg, whom we proudly and humbly welcomed to new reopened
Montmartre for the first time, the amazing vocalist Annisette of
the ultra-legendary rock band Savage Rose that Alex Riel was once a
part of, and finally Jesper Tuxen, the Hammond B3 organist from the
group Ibrahim Electric. This was an intense musical adventure into
the unknown and unpredictable. An unforgettable evening of pure
magic !
